Why September Is the Best Time to Start Preparing for KS2 SATs

When parents think about KS2 SATs, many don't start worrying until after Christmas. By then, revision books come out, practice papers become part of the weekly routine, and the countdown to May begins.
But the truth is that the best time to start preparing is September.
Starting early doesn't mean putting unnecessary pressure on your child. In fact, it often has the opposite effect. It gives children time to build skills gradually, address learning gaps, practise at a manageable pace, and grow in confidence long before SATs season arrives, making the months leading up to SATs far less stressful.
More intensive revision, including timed practice papers, is usually more useful later in the year once children have covered more of the curriculum.
Strong Foundations Take Time
KS2 SATs assess everything your child has learned throughout primary school—not just what they've covered in the weeks before the tests.
That includes reading and comprehension, grammar, spelling, punctuation, arithmetic, and mathematical reasoning. These skills improve most effectively through regular practice over time.
Starting in September gives children time to:
Identify areas they find challenging.
Build on what they already know.
Develop good learning habits.
Grow in confidence before the pressure of SATs season begins.
Rather than rushing through topics, they have the opportunity to truly understand them.
Learning Without the Pressure
One of the biggest benefits of starting early is that learning becomes part of a routine instead of feeling like a last-minute race.
Children who begin preparing in September can focus on one skill at a time. Whether it's improving reading and comprehension, mastering fractions, or strengthening grammar, they have the time to make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed.
This creates a much more positive learning experience and often helps children enjoy the preparation and feel more confident rather than fear them.

Confidence Makes a Huge Difference
Many children don't struggle because they lack ability—they struggle because they lack confidence.
When your child has several months to practise, they become familiar with different question types and learn how to approach them. As their confidence grows, so does their willingness to tackle more challenging questions.
By the time SATs arrive, they are more likely to feel prepared and settled rather than rushed or anxious.
Parents Feel Less Stressed Too
Preparing early doesn't just benefit your child—it also gives you peace of mind.
Instead of trying to fit lots of revision into a short period, you can spread learning across the school year. Short, consistent sessions are generally more effective than long periods of cramming closer to the exams.
It also leaves plenty of time for school, hobbies, family activities, and simply being a child.
What Should SATs Preparation Include?
Effective KS2 SATs preparation should go beyond completing practice papers.
A well-rounded programme should include:
Reading comprehension strategies.
Grammar, punctuation and spelling practice.
Mental maths and arithmetic fluency.
Mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.
Exam techniques and time management.
Confidence-building activities.
The goal is not just higher scores—it is helping children become confident, independent learners.
